Security tightened amid Nassarawa violence fears

Lafia - More police and military personnel have been deployed in Lafia, the Nassarawa State capital, amid fears of retribution between the warring Aggon and Alago ethnic groups that have sought refugee in the city after weekend clashes.

The ongoing fracas between the ethnic groups came to a head this past weekend when more than 30 persons were killed in Obi, the headquarters of Obi and Lafi Local Government Areas.

The crisis also erupted in Odobu and Assakio communities.

This news agency established that Lafia and other parts of the state have remained under tension amid fears of reprisal attacks by the warring parties both of whom were currently taking refuge at different locations across the state capital.

The State Acting Governor, Damishi Barau Luka, in a state-wide broadcast, on Sunday condemned the incident, warning that government would not “stand by and watch these heartless criminals in the state unleash a reign of terror on innocent citizens.”

He maintained that the government had taken adequate measures to bring the situation under control, stressing that security operatives had been deployed to the affected areas to restore normalcy.
