APC To Boko Haram: Enough Is Enough On The Senseless Killings

Members of the Islamist sect – Boko Haram – have been called upon to halt their spate of attacks and embrace dialogue in the interest of national peace and security.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) which made the call in Warri, Delta State, in a statement signed by its interim national publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, condemned the latest of such attacks that left many students of the College of Agriculture, Gujba in Yobe State dead and injured on Sunday. It described the killings as dastardly, senseless and indefensible.

The party implored traditional, religious, political and opinion leaders in the affected areas to urgently wade in to end the cycle of violence being perpetrated by the sect.

The statement reads in part, “It is clear that this Boko Haram menace cannot be resolved by the government alone, hence all stakeholders must urgently intervene to complement government’s efforts to end the insurgency and get those behind it to embrace dialogue.

“There can be no justification for Boko Haram sect to continue to kill and maim innocent citizens, especially because the victims are not just fellow Nigerians like them, but most are actually their kith and kin,’’ APC said.

The statement further described the continued violence by the sect as inexcusable, especially at a time that government has extended the Olive Branch by setting up a committee for dialogue.

“We in the APC have been unrelenting in our advocacy for dialogue as a way of ending the insurgency. Fortunately, the government has also embraced dialogue, after initially resisting it as an option.

“Boko Haram should remember that they are not fighting an external war, and that their grievances, whatever they are, can never be resolved by continued killing, maiming and plundering. They must therefore put an immediate end to their cycle of violence and opt for dialogue. The longer this violence continues, the more difficult it becomes to resolve. Enough is enough!’’ it said.

TRAGIC: Seven People Brutally Beheaded On Maiduguri/Damaturu Road

In a shocking incident, seven people have been reportedly killed Makintamari village in Kaga Local Government in Borno state along the Damaturu/Maiduguri road.

According to eyewitnesses account, the travellers were beheaded with their heads placed on their lifeless bodies on the main road.

In a related incident, gunmen also brutally attacked and slit the throats of 4 people on Saturday in the same village. The victims were reportedly returning to Maiduguri in the evening.

Makintamari is a few kilometers from Benishek where over 100 travelers were murdered a week ago by suspected Boko Haram sect members.

Yobe State Governor Ibrahim Gaidam appealed to Goodluck Jonathan, saying:

“We call on Mr. President and all the security chiefs, to intensify security operations through aerial surveillance, to contain the situation before it consumes the region and country.

“On our way from Maiduguri to Damaturu this afternoon (Sunday), we saw a trailer and bus that were burnt, with the occupants slaughtered and their corpses littering the highway.

“Government should rise up to its responsibilities to save the lives and properties of its citizens.”

The governor also added that anyone travelling on the Damaturu to Maiduguri highway, was taking a huge risk.

Sexiest Nollywood: Uche Jombo, Pat Attah go out

Season 3 of the quest for the Sexiest Man and Woman in Nollywood is coasting home gradually after months of rigorous search, voting, twists and turns in the unfolding tale.

We began with 25 men and 25 women and now we are down to the last 13 women and 12 men, which means on a particular week only a woman may have to go out.

This arose from from mathematical contraption as a result of close ties which saw two women advancing at the expense of one man.

Now the figure in the house: 13 women, 12 men came about after Uche Jombo and Pat Attah failed to make the bill. Both had it long coming after successive weeks of poor run in the quest.

Tonto Dikeh and Yul Edochie remain top of their respective leagues with some measure of smugness even though Tonto is repeatedly having her door being knocked by second-place Stephanie Okereke.

But the biggest twist of the week is Benson Okonkwo and Pope Odonwondo bundling into 3rd and 4th places respectively, shoving Frank Artus to the 5th place.

The duo have been playing ding-dong of hot chase for a while now and it came as no surprise to shock Artus.

Yet if care is not taken Frank Artus woes may just continue as Uti Nwachukwu is beginning to bear dividends. Uti moved up several places to sit in 6th. If his tempo is maintained the guy has got some steam on his wings to stun anybody.

Rita Dominic, Nadia Buari, Biodun Okeowo and Jackie Appiah have been in a trance of sort, neither moving forward nor backward.

But as we have come to know in this quest; anything can happen. So, who goes next and who makes the final 10 men and women. Your guess is as good as mine and only as certain as your votes.

‘Why Nigeria Should Celebrate At 53′ – Oshiomhole

Goverernor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole says Nigeria has cause to celebrate in spite of the challenges facing the nation.

He stated this Sunday at the Interdenominational Thanksgiving Service held at the St Paul’s Catholic Church< Benin City, to mark Nigeria’s 53rd Independence anniversary.

According to the Governor, ”we celebrate independence not because we do not have challenges, just like you celebrate your birthday, not that you have become the richest man. Nigeria has problems. Every country has its own problems and our task is to remind ourselves that Nigeria is for all of us to build”.

He said “you cannot come from another part of the world to build Nigeria and if give up on Nigeria, you don’t have another country. All of us must rededicate ourselves and I do not believe that Nigeria has no future. The fact that leaders have failed does not mean that everybody has failed, it does not mean that there are no honest and responsible people in the country”.

He said our young people must recognize that America and what the UK have their own challenges. “There are people sleeping on the streets of New York, there are homeless people there”, he said.

“Those who think by lamenting and wallowing in self pity would change things, nothing changes when you perfect how to cry, things change when you do things differently”, he said.

He urged the youths to refuse to copy the shortcomings of the elders, stressing that the elders should re-examine themselves as we celebrate independence.

Earlier, in his homily, the ArchBishop of the Catholic Diocese of Benin, Most Rev Father Augustine Akubeze said the day has been set aside as a day of prayers and thanksgiving by churches for the country.

He said “this call for prayers must be taken seriously by all of us. While we may lament that the country may not be moving as we may have wished, it will not be right not to count our blessings. In the midst of all, we should give thanks to God.

“Those who say why should we pray and give thanks have no faith, because if not for God, we will all have perished by now.”

The Governor later led other dignitaries in thanksgiving

Fashola Unveiles Tallest Hotel In West Africa

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, yesterday, unveiled the N30 billion tallest hotel in West Africa, the Intercontinental Lagos.

The hotel located at Kofo Abayomi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, is a 23-storey building with 358 rooms, 37 suites and a presidential suite.

The Intercontinental Lagos, a subsidiary of the Intercontinental Hotel Group, IHG, is owned by the Milan Group.

Fashola said the new hotel showed that the economy of the country was witnessing growth daily but without corresponding employment.

According to him, “The new sector is the tourism sector. This is the only virgin sector in the country, and it will help address the challenges of unemployment in the country.”

The governor noted that the new hotel had helped to create new 650 direct jobs in the state, adding that with the construction of more hotels and hospitality outfits, more direct jobs would be created as well as numerous indirect jobs.

Chairman, Milan Group, Ramesh Valechha said the hotel will change the landscape of Lagos and boost the hospitality industry in the state.

He noted that the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, for the project was signed on March 31, 2004 while it took two years to complete the design work before the conceptualisation of the project began.

He revealed that the Lagos State Government, Skye Bank and Wema Bank were supportive of the project.

According to Valechha, building of the hotel cost over N30 billion, while 650 jobs were created for Nigerians.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi; Oba of Lagos, Oba Riliwan Akiolu 1; ex-governor of CBN, Joseph Sanusi, and other dignitaries.

PDP denies APC allegation on poll rigging

The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has no plans to rig the 2015 presidential and general elections as alleged by the All Progressive Congress (APC), Mr Olisa Metuh, PDP National Publicity Secretary, said on Sunday.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Metuh described the allegation as “unfounded and mere sophistry’’

“This is all excuses as the APC envisioned monumental failure in the 2015 polls.

“The APC is a media creation. They are not on ground; the statement is merely trying to justify its anticipated failure.

“The ruling PDP will no longer dignify disgruntled and frustrated persons and groups with responses and replies,’’ he said.

Metuh said the PDP had directed all its organs to engage only in productive and pro-active activities.

“The PDP is only willing to discuss the policies and programmes of the government.Nigerians will like to know the opposition’s alternatives to the President’s programmes.

“Let us remain focused on issues that will lead to good governance and will provide dividends of democracy for the people,’’ he said.

The APC had in a statement alleged that the PDP had perfected plans to rig the 2015 presidential and general elections.

The APC also alleged that the PDP had planned to destabilise the PDP South-West chapter before 2015.

Pneumonia, deadly but preventable

Pneumonia is a form of acute respiratory infection that affects the lungs. Scientists say the lungs are made up of small sacs called alveoli, which fill with air when a healthy person breathes. “However, when an individual has pneumonia, the alveoli are filled with pus and fluid, causing cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills and difficulty breathing. It makes breathing painful and limits oxygen intake,” says General Practitioner, Dr. Abiola Lanre-Iyanda.

The World Health Organisation notes that pneumonia is the single largest cause of death in children worldwide.

Mode of contact

Lanre-Iyanda says one can be infected with pneumonia anywhere and at any time, including in the office, school, or the hospital. “In short, wherever there are humans, the possibility of getting the infection is there,” the physician warns.

Lanre-Iyanda says there are bacteria and viruses that live in the nose, sinuses, or mouth, but that they may spread to the lungs. “You may breathe some of these germs directly into your lungs. If this happens when you are immunocompromised, then you may end up with pneumonia,” she says

An individual is said to be in “immunocompromised” state when his ability to fight infection is greatly reduced because of a weakened immune system.

People whose immune system is not working well are less able to fight off germs, experts say. “Because of this state, they are more likely to become infected by germs that typically do not cause disease in healthy people. They are also more vulnerable to the usual causes of pneumonia, which can affect anyone,” Lanre-Iyanda adds.

Again, she says, bacteria may also spread via air-borne droplets from a cough or sneeze. “And that’s why it’s advisable to have clean handkerchiefs on hand whenever you are in public places, so that you can cover your nose and mouth when people around you cough or sneeze,” she counsels.

In addition, the physician warns, pneumonia may spread through blood, especially during and shortly after birth. “This is another reason why pregnant women must not neglect antenatal visits, so that these issues can be taken care of as soon as they are detected,” Lanre-Iyanda says.

What weakens immune system

Experts say the immune system may be weakened as a result of many factors, including when one undergoes bone marrow transplant or chemotherapy. Again, HIV infection, leukaemia, lymphoma, and other conditions that harm the bone marrow may provide the leeway for pneumonia, physicians say.

Again, they warn, certain medications — including steroids, and those used to treat cancer and control autoimmune diseases — can weaken the immune system. And those who have undergone organ transplant — including kidney, heart, and lung — may suffer weakened immunity and thus be susceptible to pneumonia infection.

Causes

The American Lung Association says pneumonia is caused by a number of infectious agents, including viruses, bacteria and fungi. Physicians say pneumonia caused by bacteria tends to be the most serious kind. “In adults, bacteria are the most common cause of pneumonia,” the association enthuses.

It explains further, “The most common agents of pneumonia are Streptococcus pneumonia, which is the most common cause of bacterial pneumonia in children; Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) — the second most common cause of bacterial pneumonia; respiratory syncytial virus — the most common viral cause of pneumonia.

“In infants infected with HIV, Pneumocystis jiroveci is one of the commonest causes of pneumonia, responsible for at least one quarter of all pneumonia deaths in HIV-infected infants.”

Presenting features

The presenting features of viral and bacterial pneumonia are similar, scientists say. However, the symptoms of viral pneumonia may be more numerous than the symptoms of bacterial pneumonia.

“In children under five years of age who have cough and/or difficult breathing, with or without fever, pneumonia is diagnosed by the presence of either fast breathing or lower chest wall in-drawing, where their chest moves in or retracts during inhalation,” Paediatrician and Public Health Specialist, Dr. Rotimi Adesanya explains.

Adesanya adds that wheezing is more common in pneumonia that is due to viral infections. He also warns that infants that are severely ill as a result of pneumonia attack may be unable to feed or drink; while they may become unconscious, or experience hypothermia and convulsions.

The online portal, webmd.com notes that symptoms of pneumonia caused by bacteria usually come on quickly and they may include cough, accompanied by mucus that is rusty, green or tinged with blood. The victim may also have fever, fast breathing and feeling short of breath.

Shaking and teeth-chattering chills, as well as chest pain that often feels worse when you cough or breathe in, may also be experineced.

As time goes on, experts warn, the patient may experience extreme tiredness, nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, lower than normal body temperature in people older than age 65, and in people with poor overall health or weakened immune systems.

Worse still, the patient may experience fatigue and muscle aches, headache, and excessive sweating and clammy skin

Adesanya says newborns and infants may not show any sign of the infection; or they may vomit, have a fever and cough. “They may also appear restless or tired and without energy, or have difficulty breathing and eating,” he adds.

Lanre-Iyanda says older people who have pneumonia sometimes have sudden changes in mental awareness, though they may have different, fewer, or milder symptoms.

“They may not have a fever. Or they may have a cough but not bring up mucus. The main sign of pneumonia in older adults may be a change in how well they think. Confusion or delirium is common. Or, if they already have a lung disease, that disease may get worse,” she says.

She advises that those who have certain health conditions, such as diabetes and asthma, should get vaccinated against the flu and bacterial pneumonia.

Risk factors

Experts say while most healthy children can fight the infection with their natural defences, children whose immune systems are compromised are at higher risk of developing pneumonia. Such children include those whose immune system has been weakened by malnutrition or undernourishment, especially infants who are not exclusively breastfed.

“Pre-existing illnesses, such as symptomatic HIV infections and measles, also increase a child’s risk of contracting pneumonia,” experts say.

Environmentalists also add that certain environmental factors increase a child’s susceptibility to pneumonia. And they include indoor air pollution caused by cooking and heating with biomass fuels (such as wood or dung), living in crowded homes and smoking by parents.

Save yourself

Experts say if you are 65 or older, if you smoke, or have a heart or lung problem, you should get a pneumococcal vaccine. “It may not keep you from getting pneumonia, but if you do get pneumonia, you probably won’t be as sick,” they counsel.

You can also lower your chances of getting pneumonia by staying away from people who have the flu, colds, measles, or chickenpox.

More important, wash your hands often, as this helps prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria that may cause pneumonia.

Experts also advise against smoking, as it damages the lungs and increases the chance of infection.

Moses celebrates 100th EPL game with win

Stephen Keshi

Getting ready for the World Cup qualifying match against Ethiopia comes in different ways for Nigerian players. On Sunday, Victor Moses celebrated his 100th English Premier League appearance with the match against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. It was a superb outing for the Super Eagles attacker as his team Liverpool defeated their hosts 3-1 to move up to the second spot of the league table.

Moses who joined the Reds on loan from Chelsea at the start of the season said he was excited by the result. His key goal attempt was saved.

He wrote via his Twitter handle, “Buzzin with the win great result the lads were brilliant.”

Moses has been called up by Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi for the October 13 match in Addis Ababa in search of a Brazil 2014 World Cup ticket.

But the match was not just for the Nigerian as Luis Suarez crowned his Premier League return with a brace.

Having completed a 10-game ban for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic last season, Suarez scored in each half at the Stadium of Light as Liverpool ended a run of three games without victory.

Daniel Sturridge had given Liverpool the lead with his fifth goal of the season, with Emanuele Giaccherini replying for Sunderland early in the second half after Suarez had made it 2-0.

It was Sunderland’s first league game since the dismissal of manager Paolo Di Canio, but although they are now four points from safety, interim coach Kevin Ball will have been heartened by their second-half reaction.

Both sides threatened from early set-pieces, Keiren Westwood denying Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and Sebastian Larsson rattling the visitors’ bar, before the away side went ahead in contentious circumstances in the 28th minute.

A left-wing corner found Sturridge unmarked at the back post and although he shaped to head the ball, it actually struck his elbow before bouncing over the line.

Sunderland’s defenders did not appeal, however, and eight minutes later Sturridge’s teasing low cross from the right allowed Suarez to slide home his first goal since completing his suspension.

The Uruguayan celebrated by lifting his jersey to reveal a T-shirt bearing a picture of his family with his new-born son Benjamin, who was born on Thursday. Moses son Brentley celebrated his first birthday last Friday.

The hosts were quick to react though, and after former Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet had saved with his feet from Craig Gardner and Adam Johnson had shot narrowly over, they drew level in the 52nd minute.

Mignolet could only parry a low drive by Ki Sung-yueng and Giaccherini swept the loose ball home with his left foot to reduce the arrears.

There were chances for both teams, Mignolet denying Gardner again, while Westwood saved from Victor Moses and Kolo Toure, before Suarez tucked in his second goal from another Sturridge cross in the 89th minute.

Stupid colleague caused our arrest –Suspect

Olusanya, Balogun and Oluwatosin

Some robbery suspects engaged in a war of words on Thursday at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters.

The suspects, who were recently arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, traded blames over who caused their arrest.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects, Fatai Balogun, Wale Oluwatosin and Gbenga Olusanya, were arrested shortly after robbing a family in the Iju, Ishaga area of the state.

Police authorities said after the robbery, the suspects shared the loot and went their separate ways.

Oluwatosin was, however, spotted while hiding his gun at the backyard of his house.

An eyewitness was said to have reported to the police and Oluwatosin was arrested. It was learnt that through his confessional statement, the police apprehended his colleagues.

One of the suspects, Balogun, who claimed to be a barber, said he regretted following Oluwatosin for the robbery.

He said, “He (Oluwatosin) is a very stupid boy. He is just 20-years-old and I see him like a younger brother because we grew up in the same area. Some days ago, he told me that there was a man in the area drove a nice car and he had studied the man’s movements.

“We got guns and when it was midnight, we stormed the house. We stole about N500,000 and I felt this was enough, but Oluwatosin was not satisfied. He stole CDs, laptops, seven mobile phones, video games and other items that we did not need.

“Carrying such things around at night could draw suspicion to us and I told him this but he was too stubborn. As I predicted, he was the one that caused our arrest. He is stupid.”

Another suspect, Olusanya, said he was not an armed robber but a smuggler. He said he knew the gang but had only followed them for one operation.

He said, “I followed them for a robbery some months ago but we did not succeed. On that particular operation, we met policemen on the road and decided to turn back. However, the driver was drunk and we had an accident.

“We had to snatch another car which we used to escape. After the unsuccessful robbery, I went back to my smuggling business because I felt those guys were not serious armed robbers. They were too clumsy.”

Oluwatosin, who is the youngest among the suspects, said he went into robbery so he could impress the suspects.

He said the suspects usually gave him N7, 000 as an informant but he wanted to make more money which made him to lead the operation.

He said, “I knew Balogun was an armed robber and I looked up to him. He used to give me N7,000 as an informant, but I felt I could do more. I did not know I would get caught after my first robbery.”

Deputy Police Public Rleations Officer, Damasus Ozoani, said the suspects would soon be charged to court.

Nigeria to host 2014 African Top 16 Cup

The International Table Tennis Federation has granted Nigeria the hosting right for the 2014 African Top 16.

According to the President of the African Table Tennis Federation, Khaled El-Salhy, the bid was approved based on the recommendation of the ATTF.

The ATTF president wrote, “This is to confirm that ITTF has approved the bid of Nigeria and recommendation of ATTF Executive Committee to stage the 2014 ITTF-Africa Top 16 Cup in Lagos from June 27 to 28, 2014.

We are confident the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation can organise a Continental/World Title event quite successfully. The Lagos Classics was quite successful in terms of media coverage, while the turnout of spectators really gave a good image to the event.

Moreover, the technical benefit for Nigerian players was also a big gain.”

He added, “The Lagos Classics was a pilot project for Nigeria and ATTF to use the media coverage to promote advertising/sponsorship resources, as well as the expected technical promotion for all African players especially Nigerian players.”

With the tournament already listed in the ITTF calendar for 2014, ATTF vice president, Olabanji Oladapo, believes Nigeria would derive a lot of gains from staging the championship.

An excited NTTF president, Wahid Oshodi, describes this development

as a sign of good things to come to the sport in Nigeria.

“We are pleased that the ATTF has granted the NTTF the hosting rights to the new premier competition in Africa. This is fallout of the successful Lagos Classics, which we recently held and it is recognition of the hard work the NTTF has put in over the last three months in developing the game in Nigeria,” Oshodi said.

JTF destroys 127 illegal refineries, arrests 29

The Joint (Military) Task Force in the Niger Delta says it has arrested 29 alleged oil thieves and destroyed 127 illegal refineries in the Niger Delta.

In a statement on Sunday, JTF spokesman, Lt.-Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, said the suspects were arrested during the series of anti-oil-theft operations between September 16 and September 28. He added that the 29 suspects were currently undergoing preliminary investigations and would soon be handed over to relevant prosecuting agencies.

Nwachukwu explained that in Bayelsa State, troops of 343 Regiment of the JTF in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area clamped down on 98 illegal crude oil distillation sites.

He said the sites were operating with 119 illegal distillation tanks and 37 large open wooden boats (Cotonou boats) laden with stolen crude oil and illegally-distilled Automated Gas Oil.

He said in a separate operation, troops of 29 Battalion and the Gun Boat Patrol Company, arrested a barge with three crew and a vessel christened MT Tora Eagle with 11 crew members in Bodo waterways and Akassa creek in Rivers and Bayelsa states respectively.

Nwachukwu said, “The barge was intercepted while conveying some quantity of illegally sourced crude oil, while the vessel was laden with 3,600 drums of stolen petroleum product.

“The troops also scuttled five illegal crude oil distillation sites and 10 Cotonou boats filled with stolen crude oil along Lewe, Bodo, Elem Sagangama, Oluwasiri and Bodo West in Rivers State.”

He said the outfit’s Operation Pulo Shield, 19 and 3 Battalions’ troops covering Edo and Delta states scuttled 24 illegal oil distillation camps and 73 Cotonou boats.

He said 31 of such boats were intercepted at an illegal crude oil loading point close to an abandoned oil well in Warri North, while 27 of the arrested boats were intercepted in Egara creek along NNPC pipeline in Warri South Local Government Area.

Nwachukwu added, “The operation also swept through Ajide, Lagos; Makara, Egwu Aghara watersides in Warri-North, Warri North-West, Warri South West and Ethiope West Local Government areas of Delta, where oil stealing was also found to be thriving.

“The outfit intercepted 61 pieces of 75 HP speed boats and a truck laden with 33,000 litres of AGO while they were still lifting the stolen products. 502 drums, 22 steel tanks, four plastic surface tanks, 77 metal drums laden with stolen crude oil and illegally distilled AGO and four pumping machines used by the oil thieves were also seized during the operations.”

Obasanjo not part of us –New PDP

Members of the New Peoples Democratic Party have said former President Olusegun Obasanjo is not a member of the faction.

It said the former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP was not directly or by proxy, linked to the faction of the ruling party.

A statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the faction, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze in Abuja on Sunday, also cautioned against arresting or ridiculing the former President over his alleged closeness to the faction.

Eze said former President Obasanjo played an important role in making Dr. Goodluck Jonathan the President of Nigeria and deserved respect.

He said, “We do not know why General Olusegun Obasanjo (retd.) is being linked with the New PDP.

“Let us state unequivocally that this foremost nationalist has not in any way – either directly or by proxy – had anything to do with our existence and operations.

“Ridiculing and plotting the arrest of such a distinguished personality that fought to keep this nation as one entity and contributed immensely in making the PDP the most vibrant, virile, versatile and biggest political party in Africa as a nobody is not the best strategy to use to fight the cause of President Jonathan, who knows what Chief Obasanjo did to make him President in the first place.”

Eze also raised the alarm over an alleged plan to begin a crackdown on members of the faction, including the seven governors.

Governors in the New PDP are Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers); Rabiu Kwankwanso (Kano); Murtala Nyaho (Adamawa); Sule Lamido (Jigawa); Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara); Babangida Aliyu (Niger); and Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto).

He said members of the faction had received intelligence reports that the Presidency was putting finishing touches to what it called “Operation Total Crackdown on G7 and their allies in the New PDP.”

He said when the report got to them that members of the faction were going to be arrested and jailed without charges, they discarded it, describing it as a joke.

However, he said an interview granted an online medium by Alhaji Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, in which he allegedly said there were pressures on President Goodluck Jonathan to arrest both Obasanjo and a former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, showed that such plan was in the offing.

Eze said, “The sin of these two distinguished Nigerian statesmen, according to those plotting their ‘demystification,’ is their alleged support for the New PDP, including the G7 Governors.”

He said in view of the seriousness of the plot, the National Chairman of the New PDP, Alhaji Abubakar Baraje had summoned an emergency meeting of the National Working Committee of the faction on how best to respond to the situation.

Though he said that they concluded at the meeting not to be intimidated for any reason, even if it means death, as the members believed that they were fighting a just cause, Eze nevertheless said Baraje directed the members to prepare their Will.

In his reaction, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Ibrahim Jalo, said all the aggrieved governors would soon return.

Jalo said, “Our governors, though aggrieved, would soon return to us. No one would leave a winning team, or abandon a bright future for an uncertain one.

Another policeman caught on video demanding N10,000 bribe

The policeman

For the third time in the past two months, another policeman has been caught on video demanding a bribe of N10,000 from a motorist.

The footage, secretly filmed by a passenger at the back seat of a vehicle in Onitsha, Anambra State, has so far received thousands of hits on YouTube. The three-minute 18-second video which first appeared on the YouTube channel of one Tola Tim, has since become an Internet sensation.

In the video, a policeman apprehended the driver of a vehicle that was coming from Akure, Ondo State to Umuahia, Abia State. The policeman sat in the front seat with the driver, and after checking the vehicle particulars, declared that he had discovered some discrepancies between the documents and the chassis number.

In the video, the policeman explained that the number ‘0’ was the last number on the chassis number inscribed on the vehicle, while number ‘3’was the last number on the documents presented to him for perusal.

The driver was seen arguing with the policeman that he had asked him to veer off the road in order to enable him (policeman) do proper checking of the vehicle. Once the alleged discrepancies were discovered, the policeman insisted that he would collect N10,000 before he would release him.

The driver’s appeal that there was an unintended mix-up somewhere and that the vehicle was not a stolen one fell on deaf ears. A nursing mother who sat at the back also appealed to the policeman.

The man in uniform bellows, “Settle us. Just give us N10,000 make I waka comot. Or is it too much? If I knew you stole the vehicle, I won’t collect money from you.”

But the driver, on noticing the adamance of the policeman, said he won’t give in to his demands.

“It is three much! I want you to take me to your station. I’m not afraid of anything. I can go back to Akure. At worst, I will miss my appointment in Umuahia. Why will I part with N10,000 on the vehicle I didn’t steal? No sir! I can’t do that.

“I will rather go back to Akure, get the registration officer and other supporting documents, come back with another vehicle and clear myself. And that is to tell you that I have not done something wrong,” the driver said.

The unidentified driver also calmed the nerves of the apprehensive nursing mother who clutched a baby girl to herself. “My sister, don’t worry! At worst, you will sleep in a hotel with your baby when I go back to Akure,” the driver added.

The policeman replied, “Eh eh. It is three much. Wetin make am too much?” After ruminating over the issue for some seconds, the policeman, who was armed with a gun, ordered, “Driver, come down.” And the video went dead.

Meanwhile, outrage has trailed the incident on various social media platforms. Those who have watched the video online describe the encounter as a pointer to the depth of rot and decay in the Nigeria Police Force.

They urged the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, to conduct an orderly room trial to ascertain the policeman’s culpability in the alleged crime and place appropriate sanctions on him if found guilty.

An anonymous reader on lindaikeji.blogspot.com says apart from condemning the act of corruption and sacking the culprit, more needs to be done to cater for the welfare of the rank and file of the police.

The reader said, “If you have a police officer as your relative, you will understand better. The income they get can’t even feed them alone not to talk of their families. The country doesn’t cater adequately for their needs. Many police barracks look like refuse dumps and they are expected to live there with their children.”

But a YouTube user, Paul Saint, argued that there is no excuse for being corrupt, attributing the behaviour to greed.

Saint stated, “This has nothing to do with the service welfare of the police. Corruption in Nigeria has nothing to do with low or high salary pay. If you are corrupt, no matter what you earn, you will still find ways to illegally enrich yourself. Most cases of corruption recorded in this country are perpetrated by persons who are otherwise fairlycomfortable with bribes.

“Corruption is as a result of greed only. Not poverty or low pay. We must condemn corruption at all times and not make excuses for it. But even if they are not well paid, there is no excuse for corruption. The most corrupt persons in Nigeria started off with collecting less than N10,000 and because we excuse them or celebrate them, they step up their demands to millions and billions. Well paid or not, do not demand or collect bribe.”

It will be recalled that three cops have so far been dismissed by the police authorities after being filmed demanding bribes from motorists.

A police sergeant, Chris Omeleze, who was caught on video camera extorting N25,000 from a motorist in Lagos in August was the first casuality of the social media whistle-blowing.

Two traffic policewomen, corporals Elizabeth Itolor and Jennifer Azingbe, who were also videotaped receiving N100 bribe from a commercial bus driver at the Oshodi/Apapa Expressway were dismissed earlier this month.

Jonathan meets security chiefs, says ‘I’m depressed’

President Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday had an emergency meeting with service chiefs over the killing of 50 students of the College of Agriculture in Yobe State.

Jonathan disclosed this while fielding questions during the Presidential Media Chat broadcast live on television stations. He had earlier at the 53rd Independence Anniversary Interdenominational Church Service at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, admitted that activities of the sect were depressing him and his administration.

He said after meeting with the service chiefs, he directed them to meet and come up with ideas on how to step up the efforts aimed at curbing the attacks and killings by the insurgents which he described as “ embarrassing.”

The President said, “Like I said earlier today (Sunday), sometimes one needs a lot of courage to move on. My seat as the President can be very hot and can also be very cold.

“I held a meeting with service chiefs on the killings of students in Yobe State before coming for this media chat. We discussed and resolved that we must do more.

“You will agree with me that incidence of attacks came down after I declared state of emergency in some states but it is coming up again. I have asked the service chiefs to meet again now and see what we can do to stop these embarrassing attacks.”

When asked to respond to allegations that operatives of the State Security Service killed innocent people alleged to be members of Boko Haram at the Apo Legislative Quarters in Abuja, the President said there was enough reason to believe that those shot were suspected terrorists.

Jonathan, who added that some of those arrested had made confessional statements, said that security agencies had even foiled several plots by insurgents to bomb Abuja this month.

He said, “I have been briefed about it and people have made confessional statements. That is why I say sometimes, some of these people who call for probe don’t mean well for this country. And I always say that when there are confrontations between certain operatives and criminals in a place where people live, maybe one or two people who may be innocent probably might be affected during the exchange of fire. But definitely, there were Boko Haram elements among them .

Again, if you monitor global trend, there was this feeling about Al-Qeada network having links with Al-Shabab and Boko Haram because these criminal gangs have networks. And the feeling was that in September, they would bomb many cities across the world to commemorate 9/11. It happened in many parts of the world. What happened in Nairobi, Kenya, is being linked to that and people attempted to also bomb Abuja in September.

“Some were arrested and some were killed but people confessed. There were obviously Boko Haram elements among them.”

At the Independence anniversary church service tagged “Living with certainty in uncertain times,” the President said he lacked words and courage to explain to the bereaved families, and indeed Nigerians, what happened to the College of Agriculture students on Sunday.

While describing Boko Haram activities and other challenges facing his administration as creations of the devil meant to slow him down, Jonathan vowed that the insurgents would not succeed.

He pledged that although forces of evil would continue to attempt to drag the nation back, he would leave the country better than he met it.

He said, “Today, you will agree with me that if you were in my shoes, you will lack words to say. We had this programme in mind when we went to bed last night that by this time, we would all gather here to thank God for what he has done for this great country.

“But then, only a few minutes after midnight, reports came in that about 21 students were murdered in Yobe State by a group that described themselves as Boko Haram.

“If you are wearing my shoes, what courage will you have to stand here before Nigerians? What message will you send to Nigerians and the parents of these people, our future leaders, students of a college of agriculture?

“Will you say that the killing of these students is political? The students belonged to which political group? People who killed them don’t even know them. Will you say it is ethnic cleansing? They belonged to which ethnic group in Nigeria?

“Will you say it was based on religious belief or what? These killed students, are they Christians, Muslims or what? This is the situation almost on a daily basis. It’s quite depressing!

“But having listened to the message of the CAN President (Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor), you will agree with me that all of us have hope. By God’s grace, we will get to where we want to get to as a nation.

“The journey of a nation is just like the journey of an individual. We will encounter obstacles. Sometimes, it gets darker when you are getting nearer. The challenges we are seeing now are very transient and we will surely get over them.

“No Boko Haram or any group can suffer this country. We may suffer pains just like Jesus Christ said at critical moment that though the spirit is willing, the body is weak.

“I believe these challenges are the creations of the devil to slow down our development as a nation but we have reached the turning point where we must all move to join the developed society.”

It was a bloody weekend in Yobe and Borno states where the fundamentalist Islamist sect, Boko Haram, killed at least 54 people

While 50 of them were students of the School of Agriculture, Guijba in Yobe State, four were travellers who were accosted on the Damaturu-Maiduguri Road on Saturday evening by the insurgents.

Investigations revealed that the Boko Haram members attacked the College of Agriculture situated along the Guijba-Damaturu Road at 12 midnight when most of the students were already asleep.

A security source confided in one of our correspondents that 50 students were killed by the insurgents who wielded guns, swords and knives. But the state government put the casualty at 40.

It was further stated that several other students, who were lucky to have escaped the killings with different degrees of injuries, were taken to the emergency ward of the general hospital.

Gruesome death

The security source claimed that the gunmen used swords and knives to kill 36 of the students to avoid attracting the attention of security operatives. He however added that 14 others, who broke the wooden windows of their hostels to escape into the nearby bushes, were shot dead by the insurgents.

He added that some of the corpses were without heads while others had heads hanging to the bodies in spite of the attempts to sever them.

The source stated further that all the victims of the attack were male students aged between 18 and 22.

At the time of filing this story, wailing parents and relatives gathered outside the Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital mortuary in Damaturu , where rescue workers laid out bloody bodies in an orderly row on the lawn for them to identify their loved ones.

One body had its fists clenched to the chest in a protective gesture while another had hands clasped under the chin, as if in prayer.Yet, another had arms raised in surrender.

The Medical Director of the specialist hospital, Damaturu, Dr Garba Fika, who said that 40 corpses were received by the hospital, added that five students, were receiving treatment.

But the Provost of the College, Molima Idi Mato, was quoted by the Associated Press as having said that “the number of dead could be as high as 50.”

“They attacked our students while they were sleeping in their hostels. They opened fire at them,” he added.

Mato was also quoted to have said that security forces were still recovering the bodies and that about 1,000 students had fled the campus.

He added there were no security forces stationed at the college despite government assurances two weeks ago that they would be deployed.

The AP quoted a surviving student, Ibrahim Mohammed, as having said that the extremists rode into the college in two double-cabin pickup all-terrain vehicles and on motorcycles, some dressed in Nigerian military camouflage.

Mohammed, according to the AP, added that the insurgents appeared to know the layout of the college well as they attacked the four male hostels but carefully avoided the only hostel reserved for girls.

When contacted, the Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, said that he would call back to give the Army’s reaction to the killing.

Another call to his mobile telephone line after the discussion indicated that it was switched off.

Schools in the state re-opened 13 days ago after 10 weeks of forced closure following attacks targeted on schools.

In June, seven students and two teachers were killed at the Government Secondary School, Damaturu and in July, 22 students and two teachers were killed at Government Secondary School, Mamudo.

Gov Geidam, deputy visit victims, weep

Yobe State Governor. Ibrahim Gaidam, who visited the specialist hospital to inspect the wounded and the corpses of students, was in tears as he urged security operatives to intensify aerial surveillance of the area.

The Deputy Governor, Abubakar Aliyu and other dignitaries, who accompanied him, also shed tears when they saw the corpses of the students.

Gaidam, through his Special Adviser on Press Affairs and Information, Mr. Abdullahi Bego, later issued an electronic statement in which he condemned the murder of the students as ‘devastating, heinous and barbaric.’

The statement put the total number of dead at 40 and the injured at four. It added that the governor promised to foot the medical bills of the injured.

The statement reads, “Governor Gaidam strongly condemns attack on students of the State College of Agriculture, Gujba. The governor describes the attack as devastating, heinous and barbaric.

“Forty students were killed by criminals and terrorists while four others were injured during the attack.

“On a visit Sunday to the injured at the Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital, Damaturu, Governor Gaidam commiserated with families of the victims and prayed the Almighty Allah to make the injured recover quickly.

“The governor also says the Yobe State Government will foot the bill for medical treatment for the injured.

“Governor Gaidam calls on the military and other law enforcement operatives in the state to intensify surveillance and patrols to deal more effectively with the prevailing security challenges.

“The governor notes that although there is increase in troop movement and the deployment of more military hardware in the northeast, people are yet to see the kind of action on the ground that effectively nips criminal and terrorist activities in the bud.”

Travellers sprayed with bullets

Another group of Boko Haram insurgents barricaded the Damaturu-Maiduguri highway and killed four travellers in Mallumti, a few kilometres to Benesheikh, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State.

It was gathered that the insurgents were confronted by a vigilante group known as civilian JTF, who killed three of them.

The driver of one of the vehicles attacked by the gunmen, Mallam Usman Garba, said, ‘ I have to give thanks to Allah for sparing our lives. We could have run into the terrorists who killed four people in Mallumti village, but when I sighted them barricading the road, I quickly make a U-turn with my passengers. We had to go-back to Damaturu before coming to Maiduguri Motor Park this (Sunday) morning.”

It was learnt that the insurgents also killed 34 people in three different attacks in Borno State on Wenesday and Thursday last week.

In the first two attacks, they invaded Fulatari and Kanumburi communities in Gamboru Ngala Local Government Area of the state near Nigeria’s border with Cameroun.

At least 27 people were killed in the two attacks.

The dead included the village head of Gamboru, Lawan Ali Shettima.

The victims of a third attack were the driver and six other occupants of a truck belonging to business magnate, Aliko Dangote, at a border community between Yobe and Borno..

The insurgents were also said to have burnt down the truck said to be conveying bags of cement to Maiduguri.

The Caretaker Chairman of Gamboru/Ngala, Alhaji Modu Sherriff, was quoted as having condemned the heinous killing during a condolence visit to the affected community.

I hate bras ' Nicki Minaj nearly 'falls out' on Ellen show

On the heels of Drake’s appearance on Ellen last week, Nicki Minaj followed her Young Money labelmate and linked up with the talk show host as well.

Something Drake didn’t do? While Nicki made her way to Ellen’s couch in a revealing black jacket with one button fastened, a little bit of her breast was visible, forcing her to adjust the top.

This prompted Ellen to say:
“Look, if you need to borrow a brá from me. You just let me know.”

Even though Ellen didn’t have a brá for Nicki, she presented her with some custom-made black thongs that may have made the rapper blush, just a bit. The two also talked about Nicki Minaj’s time as a judge on American Idol.

BREAKING: Boko Haram Gunmen Kill 40 Yobe Agric College Students In Early Morning Attack

Unknown gunmen have launched a vicious attack on the College of Agriculture in Yobe state, killing 40 students.

Details of the attack are still sketchy but the provost of the college, Mulima Mata, confirmed the incident, which the News Agency of Nigeria said occurred early Sunday morning.

The Yobe state command of the Nigeria police could however not be reached to confirm the incident.

Residents believe the attack has the imprimatur of the extremist Boko Haram sect which has in the past three years slaughtered thousands of innocent Nigerians in attacks on schools, places of worship, media establishments and security installations.

The corpses of the students have been deposited at the General Sanni Abacha Specialist Hospital and more are still been expected at press time.

The Nation learnt that the students were shot in their hostels and classrooms while fleeing from the attackers.

Gujba is about 60 kilometres South East of Damaturi the state capital The State Commissioner of Police Sanusi Rufai confirmed the attack but said the details of the attack are still sketchy.

“Yes, I just got a report of the attack on the school but I cannot give you details at the moment because my men are yet to give me a full brief of the incident,” CP Sanusi informed.

Academic activities only resumed last week in schools across Yobe state following 10 weeks of closure after the brazen attack by members of the violent sect on two secondary schools, which led to the death of 29 students and three teachers.

The state government ordered the closure of all schools in the northeastern state after the attack by members of the sect on Government Secondary School, Mamudo.

But Government Secondary School, Mamudo, remained closed for another two weeks for the conclusion of ongoing reconstruction work in the school, the state Commissioner of Education, Mohammed Lamin said. The Boko Haram sect had on Wednesday and Thursday murdered at least 27 persons in two separate attacks in the border towns of Borno State, government officials and security sources said.

Trader bathed with acid while asleep

Sherifat, before being bathed with the substance

For about five months, the Agbaje family of Ifako, Gbagada, Lagos State, has been battling to find an explanation to the tragedy that has befallen it.

The family members said while they were seeking a solution to the tragedy, they had sought the aid of the Ogun State Police Command to unravel the circumstances surrounding their challenge.

The mother of the house, Mrs. Sherrifat Agbaje was attacked with acid while she was sleeping on her bed on April 23, 2013.

Sherifat, a fish seller, said she was in a rented apartment in the Ifo area of Ogun State and was fast asleep when an unknown assailant crept up to her window in the middle of the night and bathed her with acid.

The mother of six is currently in pains as her face, chest and arms were severely burned in the attack. She, however, miraculously escaped being blinded.

Her five-year-old daughter, Kehinde, who was sleeping beside her, was also lucky as she escaped with a few burns to her back and arms.

Sherifat told PUNCH Metro that it had been her practice for three years to travel to Ifo. Ogun State, every Monday to sell fish and return home to her husband at Ifako, Lagos, on Saturdays.

Sherifat said, “There was nothing unusual about that day. Like any typical day, I went to the market to sell fish. I didn’t sell much because there was a free-for-all among the area boys. It disrupted our business.

“My eldest daughter, Omowunmi, was, however, able to make more sales by hawking the fish around the market area. Three of my children were with me then.”

At the end of the day, Sherifat went back to her apartment in Ifo and watched the TV with her children until 12am.

She said Kehinde and her twin, Taiwo, had persuaded her to let them sleep in her bed, but she insisted that they must sleep on the floor.

It was learnt that the room had six windows, which were made with wood. All the windows were closed on that night except one. It faced Sherifat’s bed.

She said, “I had slept for about 30 minutes when I felt something hot on my body. Initially, I thought it was fire and I started screaming.

“My screams woke up Omowunmi. She took one look at my body and started shouting that somebody had poured something on me. That was when it dawned on me that my house was not on fire.

“In the process of trying to shake off whatever had been poured on me, some drops of the acid poured on Kehinde, who had come back to sleep beside me.”

Sherifat’s neighours came out to find out what the problem was. They also searched the neighbourhood, but no one was caught in connection with the incident

In the morning, the case was reported at the Ifo Police Station. Till date, the mystery had yet to be unraveled by the police.

Her husband, Tunde, told PUNCH Metro that he was alerted to the incident the same day at 3am.

He said, “It was Omowunmi who called me. At dawn, I set out for Ifo and met my wife at a catholic hospital where she had been taken to. The hospital said the burns were serious and transferred her to the General Hospital, Sango.

“It has been tough for us ever since. I dig boreholes for a living and without my wife’s support, taking care of our six children has been difficult. I do not know what would have made someone attack my wife with acid. To the best of my knowledge, she has no problem with anyone to warrant any attack.

“Now, my children’s education is on hold. They can no longer attend school. All our finances are geared towards restoring my wife to normalcy.”

He said some doctors at the general hospital had advised that Sherifat would require some surgery in India to repair the damage to her body. He added, “But I don’t have money.”

The Ogun State Police Relations Officer, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone.

He said a suspect had been identified and was wanted in connection with the attack. He however did not give the identity of the suspect.

He said, “The case is under investigation and efforts are being made to apprehend him. The Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, has directed that the suspect should be declared wanted if he fails to turn up

£3,000 visa bond plan being reviewed – UK

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Andrew Pocock

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Andrew Pocock, has said the British government is reviewing its plan to introduce a £3,000 visa bond scheme.

He also said while there were security concerns in Nigeria, they were not overwhelming in many respects and could be managed.

Pocock said this on Wednesday when he visited the Nigerian Stock Exchange to ring the closing bell, and to discuss ways in which more British companies could be encouraged to invest in the nation’s capital market.

Reports had emerged earlier this year that the British government was planning to implement a new scheme under which some visitors from some Commonwealth countries, including Nigeria, would be asked to pay a £3,000 cash bond in return for visitor visas that allowed them to stay in the UK for up to six months.

“In the long run, we are interested in a system of bonds that deters overstaying and recovers costs if a foreign national has used our public services,” an unnamed Home Office official had been quoted as saying in June.

The development had resulted in an outcry by nationals of the affected countries with the Nigerian government calling on its British counterpart to renounce the policy.

However, the British High Commissioner, after ringing the closing bell at NSE in Lagos told journalists that, “We have made it very clear to our government in London that there is concern about this. So, this is being reviewed and considered in London as we speak now.”

Pocock, who said visas were issued to 125,000 Nigerians every year, added, “If we decide that this will become a policy we will tell, firstly then Nigerian government and secondly, the Nigerian people so everyone has all the information they need. This is not a major threat to Nigerians coming to the UK; that I can guarantee.”

According to Pocock, the scheme will not be a threat to Nigerians because even if it is implemented it will affect only a fraction of Nigerians who apply for UK visas.

He also clarified that, “The visa bond, as it is being called here, is not a £3,000 charge for a British Visa. That is not the case, it is not going to happen now and it is not going to happen in the future. Visa fee, which is what you pay for a visa, will not go to £3,000 or anywhere near it.”

Fashola Apologises To Igbos Over Deportation Saga

Governor Babatunde Fashola
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN) on Thursday offered an unreserved apology for the misunderstanding generated by the alleged deportation of some destitutes to Onitsha, Anambra State.

The state government was accused of dumping 70 beggars at Onitsha Bridge on July 24, a situation that generated public outcry and bad blood.

The government had said it relocated the 14 people to Onitsha after rehabilitating them, but the explanations did not appease the aggrieved Igbos, who felt they were being badly treated and hated

Fashola, who spoke at the silver jubilee of the Igbo socio-cultural think tank, Aka Ikenga held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Victoria Island, insisted he has no problems with the Igbos.

He noted that the largest herds of cattle he received when his father died was from the Igbos.

At the event were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Ayim, who represented President Goodluck Jonathan; House of Representatives Deputy Speaker, Chief Emeka Ihedioha; Catholic Bishop, Mathew Kuka; former Minister, Gen. Ike Nwachukwu; President Aka Ikenga, Goddy Uwazurike; former ambassador George Obiozor and President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Gary Enwo-Igariwey.

Others included the former President Aka Ikenga, Chief Chris Asodoka; Director, Lagos Business School, Prof. Pat Utomi; Captain Emma Iheanacho; Nollywood artistes, Onyeka Onwenu and Kanayo O. Kanayo.

Fashola said: “I came here to say to say thank you for the honour done to my family and the memory of my late father.

“People who clearly do not understand the actions taken and words spoken are those I owe an explanation. I cannot take the Igbos for granted because we have built a relationship based on tolerance, mutual respect, love and trust. That relationship was built by our ancestors and I put a lot of value in that relationship.

“I offer an unreserved apology if the actions taken had been misunderstood.

“But I think the basic issue Aka Ikenga must address is why people feel compelled to immigrate from one part of the country to the other? Is it the case that some lack the resources to develop or perhaps some parts are endowed with enormous resources but not adequately managed?

“How can development be so difficult from the zone that has produced people like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Alex Ekwueme, Ike Nwachukwu, among others?

“As political storm gathers, there are contact spots but like in football, contact spots have rules. Those who are victims of our shortcomings as professionals in and out of government should not be pounced.

“A day like these calls for deep reflection about issues of our loyalties. Are we more Igbo than Nigeria or we are more Nigeria than Igbo?”

Fashola called on residents in the state to embrace Residence Registration Scheme (RRS) to enable the government meets its obligation to them.

10 Reasons To Have Séx

It probably won't take much convincing to follow this general rule, but you should know it, anyway—the more séx you have, the healthier you'll be.

Not only can it help your general mood (thereby reducing stress), but studies show there are tangible ways séx slows down the aging process, fights disease and even heals wounds.

Here, a full breakdown of the ways getting it on can save you a trip to the ER.

1. Séx promotes heart health.
A study in the American Journal of Cardiology suggests that men who have séx twice a week have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) than men who have less frequent séx.

Research found that a low frequency of séxual activity predicted new cardiovascular events. The psychical capacity to have séx might be a marker for overall health, or the physical exercise from séx might directly protect against CVD. Or it might be that men who have regular séx enjoy improved health through stress reduction from a supportive relationship. Whatever the reason, it appears that séx is good for your ticker.

2. Doing it burns calories.
Due to its brévity, having an orgásm fries only two or three calories. But the prelude can burn quite a bit more, depending on your weight and the length and vigor of the lovemaking session. For example, a raucous romp uses about 5 METs (metabolic equivalents), a system for gauging the intensity of physical activity. (Sitting quietly, for comparison, is equal to 1 MET.) So, a 190-pound man would burn 413 calories in an hour of vigorous séxual activity. But since the average lovemaking session is about 20 minutes, you're talking about only around 150 calories. Still, that's more than double the caloric expenditure of sitting alone on the couch.

3. Séx is a natural sleeping pill.
As women know all too well, orgásm is a rather effective sleep aid for most men.

4. Séx stifles stress.
Séx, like exercise, releases anxiety, lowers stress hormones, and can help people cope with mental pressure for at least a week. In the study, 46 men and women were put in a stressful situation involving speaking and working math problems in front of a tough audience. Participants were also asked to keep a diary of their séxual activity for two weeks prior to the test. Those who had séx were the least stressed out, and their blood pressures returned to normal faster after the public speaking test. "People who had pénile-váginal intercourse did twice as well as people who only masturbatéd or had no séx at all," says psychologist and lead researcher Stuart Brody.

5. A roll in the hay keeps the doctor away.
Research shows that people who have séx once or twice weekly have stronger immune systems than people who have séx less than once a week.

6. Good love is better than a bandage.
Researchers at Ohio State University Medical Center inflicted minor blister wounds on the arms of 45 married couples during 24-hour visits on two different occasions. On the first visit, the couples were prompted to engage in a positive, supportive discussion. Two months later they returned and new wounds were administered, the couples were prompted to argue. Results showed that wounds healed nearly two times faster after the positive interaction.

7. More séx may turn back the clock.
Can having séx keep wrinkles away? British neuropsychologist David Weeks, MD, of Royal Edinburgh Hospital believes so. In a 10-year-long study, he interviewed 3,500 adults in England and the United States, and found that people who reported having séx four times a week looked about 10 years younger than they actually were. Pleasure derived from having loving séx releases hormones, including human growth hormone, that are crucial in preserving youth, he says.

8. Frequent orgásms may protect against cancer.
Several studies have suggested that frequent éjaculation over many years may decrease risk of prostate cancer. In one US study, 29,000 men, ages 46 to 81, were asked their history of séxual intercourse and másturbation between the ages of 20 and 49. Researchers at the National Cancer Institute analyzed the data and determined that the group of men who reported 21 orgásms per month was much less likely to have prostate cancer than men who averaged seven or fewer éjaculations per month. The researchers speculated that several protective factors may contribute: éjaculation may clear the prostate of carcinogenic secretions and the stress-reduction benefit from orgásm may limit potential harmful substances that could trigger cancer.

9. Love longer, live longer.
An Irish study published in the British Medical Journal in 1997 tracked the mortality of 1,000 middle-aged men over the course of a decade and concluded that séxual activity may have a protective effect on health. By comparing men according to age and health, researchers found that men who had the highest frequency of orgásms had a death rate 50-percent lower than men who did not éjaculate frequently.

10. Men who have more séx are—surprise—happier!
An Australian survey of 5,000 people showed that married men are 135 percent more likely to report happiness than single men, while only 52 percent of married women are happier than unmarried women. Could it have something to do with the fact that séx is easier for cohabiting couples? According to a national séx survey conducted by the University of Chicago, séxual activity is 25 percent to 300 percent greater for married couples compared to non-married people, depending on age
