FG arrests some politicians over ties with Boko Haram, accuses #bringbackourgirls campaign of running bank accounts

The Federal Government today July 9th said it has arrested some politicians over evidence of their ties with the dreaded terror sect, Boko haram.

Speaking at a news briefing today at the National Information Centre Abuja, the Coordinator of the Joint Information Centre for Security, Mike Omeiri, said following the recent arrest of some members of Boko Haram in Bauchi and Borno states, some materials retrieved from them after detailed investigation had evidential links with the politicians they have arrested. He however declined to disclose the names of the politicians. Continue...

Also speaking, the spokesperson for the State Security Service SSS, Marilyn Ogar accused the #bringbackourgirlscampaign of running bank accounts. She said the Nigerian security agents have information that the #Bringbackourgirls campaign now operate bank accounts and also compel members to register and carry tags before joining.

In a swift reaction, the convener of the #bringbackourgirls campaign and a former Minister of Education, Dr Oby Ezekwesili in a telephone interview with Channels TV this night, refuted the claims made by the SSS spokesperson.

"It's absolute falsehood. In fact I call it a cocktail of falsehood. We don't need bank account. This is strictly a citizens movement and neither do we need to register members. There is no person who walks over to the Unity Fountain that has not participated in our meetings. There is absolutely no truth to that and I think that should really worry Nigerians that our own state security sadly could actually put out such....I don't even know what to call it".

Asked how the campaign is being funded, Dr Ezekwesili said;

"Well its very simple. The needs that we have are so basic. Its the Tee shirts and I can see some of the people in tee shirts and I can see some of the people wearing those face caps, that's all we need and what normally happens is that all these members you see there, some bring in 10 Teeshirts, some 100. There is nothing that will need any kind of money, so you know this is really a pedestrian kind of falsehood" she said

Consumers rally with Reckitt Benckiser's Dettol to fight against Diarrhoea

In furtherance to its commitment to reduce infant mortality rates in Nigeria and promote basic health and hygiene practices among consumers, leading antiseptic brand, Dettol strengthened its affinity with consumers when they turned up for its walkathon to pledge their support against diarrhoea and their commitment to simple hygienic practices.

The walkathon which held at Teslim Balogun stadium, Surulere was part of commemorative activities to mark Dettol’s 50 years presence in the Nigerian market and was tagged ‘‘ a pledge to save 10 Million Children’’ is a strategy aimed at reaching 10 Million Moms with the multiplier effect of helping save the lives of 10 Million Nigerian children from premature death. Continue...

This initiative is centred on helping Nigeria meet its 2015 Millennium Development Goals of reducing Child Mortality for Children under the age of 5 by 6.3% by 2015.

Speaking to a mammoth crowd who turned up at the event, Marketing Director for West Africa, Reckitt Benckiser, Oguzhan Silivrili said the walkathon was a very symbolic component of the company’s greater journey motif. He described it as a conviction that let’s Dettol lead the charge in Nigeria’s journey to reducing infant mortality and to partner all relevant government and non government agencies in creating a hygiene conscious nation.

‘‘He explained that over the last 50 years Dettol’s has been at the forefront of educating consumers about health and hygiene habits through several platforms and went on to list some of Dettol’s initiatives and achievements such as New Mum Programme which has reached 5 million moms since 2006 teaching them good hygiene habits for themselves and their new born babies; the Health on Wheels Programme that has reached 150,000 families through mobile clinics; the School on Wheels Programme which has impacted three million children across schools since its inception in 2010 and finally the Direct home contact programme in which almost a million moms were reached from last year’’

The Marketing Director announced that Dettol was stepping up the ante by bringing all these programmes together on a holistic platform to make the impact even stronger and help Nigeria achieve its millennium development goals on reducing child mortality. He said that given the alarming death rate amongst children under age 5 in Nigeria there is indeed a sense of urgency attached to this journey. He explained that the motivation for the Dettol Walkathon was a demonstration of Reckitt Benckiser’s global vision of building healthier kids and happier homes.

Silivrili pointed out that two hundred thousand children in Nigeria died from diarrhoea last year and this new initiative was designed to galvanise action in the face of what he called ‘unacceptable’ number of infant mortality rates in Nigeria noting that it will take collective action to bring down these numbers. ‘‘But of course Dettol cannot do it by itself, we need your help, we need your contribution. So today we are initiating a big campaign, a holistic one which we have called MOMEMTUM- Mom to Mom which is targeted at mothers and it will be reaching one million moms at antenatal clinics every year and will empower and enable them to share best hygiene practices with each other to make a direct impact on the lives of their families and loved ones’’ he said.

At the same event, Rahul Murgai, Managing Director,Reckitt Benckiser Nigeria Limited/General Manager, Reckitt Benckiser West Africa equally said that the Momentum campaign whose goal is to save Ten million lives will go a long way in improving the hygiene situation of many households in Nigeria and significantly help to reduce death arising from preventable diseases. The Marketing Director added that Dettol intends to take a pledge from every participant at the walkathon and also each mother it contacts in its direct contact programmes to teach 2 more mothers the same habit thus creating a chain of empowerment all over Nigeria.

In their separate remarks, Dr Hamid Balogun , Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health Service Commission, Sekiru Momdu, Director , Chemical evaluation and Research NAFDAC and Dr Batty Okorochuwkwu, Second Vice President of the Nigeria Medical Association listed partnership as key to effectively creating a hygiene conscious society. They expressed their resolve to continue to encourage Dettol in its strategy of educating and empowering mothers who can help reduce infant mortality in Nigeria.

FIFA suspends Nigeria

The world football governing body, FIFA, has suspended the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, with immediate effect from all activities in football. The suspension was announced in a statement released on their website this evening Wednesday July 9th.

FIFA said the suspension was due to government interference in football activities, particularly the controversial removal of the Aminu Maigari-led board of the NFF. A High Court sitting in Jos had on July 4th sacked Aminu Maigari and other executives from the board of the NFF. This suspension by FIFA means no Nigerian team or club can participate in any FIFA competition.

“As a result of this decision, no team from Nigeria of any sort (including clubs) can have any international sporting contact (art. 14 par. 3 of the FIFA Statutes),” FIFA said.Read the full statement after the cut...

The FIFA Emergency Committee has decided today, 9 July 2014, to suspend the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with immediate effect, on account of government interference. Article 13, par. 1 and article 17, par. 1 of the FIFA Statutes oblige member associations to manage their affairs independently and with no influence from third parties.
The decision follows a letter sent by FIFA to the NFF on 4 July 2014, in which it expressed its great concern after the NFF was served with court proceedings and consequently an order preventing the president of the NFF, the NFF Executive Committee members and the NFF Congress from running the affairs of Nigerian football was granted by a High Court of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The said court order compelled the Nigerian Minister of Sports to appoint a senior member of the civil service to manage the NFF until the matter was heard in court, without giving any date for such a hearing. The authorities then appointed a person who decided to convene an extraordinary general assembly on 5 July 2014. This extraordinary general assembly was convened in violation of the NFF statutes.
Originally, an elective congress had been planned by the NFF to take place on 26 August 2014.
The suspension will be lifted once the court actions have been withdrawn and the properly elected NFF Executive Committee, the NFF general assembly and the NFF administration are able to work without any interference in their affairs.
As a result of this decision, no team from Nigeria of any sort (including clubs) can have any international sporting contact (art. 14 par. 3 of the FIFA Statutes). During the period of suspension, the NFF may not be represented in any regional, continental or international competitions, including at club level, or in friendly matches. The most immediate effect is that Nigeria will not be entitled to participate in the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup (5-24 August 2014) should the suspension not be lifted by 15 July 2014.
In addition, neither the NFF nor any of its members or officials may benefit from any FIFA or CAF development programmes, courses or training during the suspension period.

Nigerian human rights lawyer, Bamidele Aturu, dies at 49

One of Nigeria’s leading human rights lawyers, Bamidele Aturu, has died. He died today Wednesday July 9th at a Lagos hospital where he was being treated for an undisclosed ailment.

Late Bamidele Aturu came to prominence as a fighter against power abuses when, as a member of the National Youth Service Corps, he refused to shake the hand of the then military administrator of Niger State, Col. Lawan Gwadabe, in 1988 during his NYSC passing out parade declaring that the military had caused great harm to the democratic aspirations of Nigerians.

Mr Aturu studied law at the University of Ife, and devoted much of his legal practice to representing the oppressed and marginalized people in the society. He was quite for his criticism of government's policies. He was 49. May his soul rest in peace...amen.
