ABUJA— For the first time since the 2015 general elections, national leader of ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has met with the party’s national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, in a move widely seen as the beginning of his new task as presidential negotiator into the crises bedeviling the party.

Speaking with journalists after the meeting, which lasted nearly four hours, Tinubu, said though the party remained the hope of Nigerians, it had lost tremendous goodwill since the 2015 elections.

The APC leader spoke on a day Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said the advice he gave Nigeria’s ex-Presidents to quit politics and join the retirees’ club should also be heeded by President Muhammadu Buhari in the interest of the nation.

Tinubu, who was recently appointed by President Buhari to reconcile warring parties within the party, said he was visiting the national secretariat as part of consultations on how to carry out his assignment.

He said: “Since we won the elections, the expectations were very high and the goodwill was extremely high. But where are we today?

‘’The solution is to seek opinion and advice on the various complex issues around some states or if there is any national one, to reconcile, move the party in a cohesive manner, reposition it and build confidence among ourselves.”

Though he declined comments on whether he was among the foremost aggrieved stakeholders of the party, having last year called for the sack of Chief Odigie-Oyegun, Tinubu said challenges faced by the government and the President were enormous.

He said: “It is only because people are not paying attention to the various statistics that are available. We have never governed before, but we won the confidence of Nigerians to govern.

“We have a creed to really serve the country, change and reform the country. It is not easy to have those changes implemented like instant curfew. We have to grow and face challenges. I sympathize with us and we should equally look at ourselves.”

Tinubu’s visit to Oyegun

Welcoming Tinubu to the APC national secretariat, national chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said the assignment given to him (Tinubu) by the President was significant to heal the wounds where necessary.

“Your visit is very significant, in view of your Presidential assignment which I will describe as a peace ambassador, to heal wounds where the party has wounds and bring everybody together behind one single objective, which is the APC being in good condition to be a fighting political force, such that in 2019, the election will become virtually a runaway victory for the party.

“There is no question at all that we have major issues with the National Assembly, major issues in Kano, Kogi, Benue states with the current challenges that we are facing.

“So, we truly welcome your appointment and I want to say that we will give you all the assistance that you will possibly need to make your assignment a most successful one.”

Tinubu’s counsel on retirees’ club, good for Buhari — PDP

Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said the advice by APC national leader, Tinubu, that Nigeria’s ex-Presidents should quit politics and join the retirees’ club should be heeded by President Buhari in the interest of the nation.

The party said Tinubu’s position completely vindicated the positions of former Presidents, including Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida, PDP as well as majority of Nigerians, who believe President Buhari should not seek re-election in 2019, having failed woefully in governance and nation building.

The PDP, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, yesterday, said the former Lagos State governor had invariably weighed Buhari and found him unfit to remain in office beyond 2019.

The statement read: “Every discerning Nigerian has discovered the fact that Tinubu is subtly passing a critical message to President Buhari and his supporters that he should not contest the 2019 election and that Nigerians have already moved on even without them.”

“Even Tinubu knows that President Buhari, for obvious reasons, is the most qualified of all our elder statesmen to join the retiree’s club and save the nation the agony of more years of misrule characterized by untold economic hardship, heavy bloodletting and general indignation.

“The supporters of President Buhari should therefore accept the reality by reading the handwriting on the wall and heed wise counsel from well- meaning Nigerians. In any case, the APC is already on a death throe, having led the worst government in the history of our nation and will end up as the first party in government at the centre that will be rejected by Nigerians at a second attempt.”

Maiduguri — Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima yesterday summoned officials of all markets, motor parks, shopping complexes, football fields and other places of public gatherings in Maiduguri, for an emergency security meeting scheduled for today with heads of security agencies and the civilian JTF.

The meeting, which is expected to take place at the Government House in Maiduguri, was in response to the twin suicide attacks at the Maiduguri Monday market yesterday morning which resulted in the death of one and 18 others sustaining injuries.

Governor Shettima visited the scene of the suicide attacks around the market and was at the accident and emergency ward of the Maiduguri Specialist Hospital where he met each of the survivors out of which three were undergoing emergency surgery at the hospital theater.

The suicide attacks were carried out by two suspected female suicide bombers in two close spots, both outside the Monday Market Maiduguri before 10:00am, said the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Damien Chukwu who received Shettima at the scene. The CP said one person died with 18 persons injured.

"Tomorrow, we will be having an emergency security meeting involving management of all the markets, motor parks, shopping centers, football fields and other attack prone areas and the we will invite the Civilian JTF and of course our security officials so that we cross pollinate ideas and come up with some new measures that will strengthen our existing security structure around markets," Shettima said.

The Boko Haram insurgents had repeatedly targeted the Maiduguri Monday market using persons who conceal bombs and pretend to be buyers, targeting traders and customers before blowing themselves up.

Lagos — Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of Lagos State Police Command, weekend arrested two Chinese for operating a fake embassy in Lagos.

The team led by RRS Commander, ACP Olatunji Disu, also arrested two Nigerian collaborators.

The operatives clamped down on the fake embassy after many members of the public were swindled of huge sums of money. The fake embassy is situated inside a hotel, Golden Point and Suite, on Duduyemi Street in Ejigbo.

Those arrested were identified as 47-year-old Liu Honyang and 49-year-old, Sun Xinai (both Chinese) and their Nigerian collaborators: 47-year-old Oriyomi Olawale and 25-year-old Desmond Chinedu.

After the arrest, some of their victims showed up at the RRS's headquarters, recounting how they were duped respectively, hence their deportation from Trinidad and Tobago.

One of the victims, Adekunle Adefuye, said, "I met these people through one of their agents, Dorcas Slyver. She is a daughter to my brother's pastor in Abeokuta. I told her my intentions to travel to United States of America. Then she told me to come to Lagos that she could procure the American visa for me.

"On getting to Lagos, she took me to these Chinese where I was told that I should go to Trinidad and Tobago. They persuaded me to go to Trinidad and Tobago, that it was easier to secure employment with at least 3,000 dollars as salary.

"Initially, I insisted that I preferred America. But they brainwashed me into agreeing to go to Trinidad and Tobago. It was at this point I was told that I would pay N1.3 million for the whole process, including visa processing and flight fare. The payment was made in instalment. N376,000 for Visa, ticket N850,000, accommodation N39,000 and Visa Fee N33,000, which I obliged and paid all the monies into Dorcas' GTB Accounts: 0130671906."

He revealed that he and another person were rounded up immediately they got to Trinidad and Tobago by the country's immigration officers for coming into the country with fake visas and then deported back to Nigeria after a 48-hour detention.

2017 budget’ll end Nigeria’s economic woes – Buhari

ABUJA—President Muhammadu Buhari last night expressed optimism that the proposed 2017 budget would not end the current economic recession facing Nigeria but would also shoot the country into economic prosperity. President Muhammadu Buhari presides over October 12 ,2016 Federal Executive Council meeting. He also enjoined Nigerians not to be deterred by the reality of the “temporary challenges” but should be strengthened by them. The encouragement were the highlights of the president’s address to Nigerians on the occasion of 2016 Eid-el-maulud celebrations today. Meanwhile, the president who wished Nigerians especially muslims a happy Eid-el-maulud celebration is billed to lay the budget estimates before a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday. The address read in full: “Dear Compatriots, again the calendar of life has brought us into another period of celebration, and deep reflection. Celebration, because we are marking the birth of Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him), and deep reflection, because it is another opportunity of pausing, taking a deep breath and reflecting on the current realities before us. “First of all, I wish all Muslims a happy and memorable celebration of the birth of the great Prophet, through whose teachings, particularly on peaceful living, tolerance, sobriety, generosity, sacrifice and honesty, and wisdom, the nation has gained immensely in building a harmonious and prosperous society. “The universal truths of the Prophet’s values remain unchanged. “Against all odds, we have used these pillars of strength in securing a just and fair society, and our efforts are beginning to yield dividends in curbing terrorism, corruption and other crimes that devalue our humanity. “The reality of the temporary challenges should not undermine our hope, reverse our collective will to succeed, or divide us; rather it should remind us of why we need to stay together, fight together and succeed together. “As we look forward to 2017 with hope and huge expectations, let me assure you that with collective dedication and hard work, we will overcome the mountain of economic difficulties, and return our country to the path of prosperity.”

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel, has ordered the immediate arrest of the contractors and engineers, that constructed the Reigners Bible Church, which collapsed in Uyo on Saturday.

The Governor and his Deputy were attending the ordination service of Bishop Akan Weeks, when the building came down. He, however, escaped death.

One of Emmanuel’s personal assistants on media, Mr. Aniekeme Finbarr, told CNN’s Becky Anderson, that his principal gave the order on Sunday.
