Star Wars:The Force Awakens' grosses whopping $120. 5 million for opening day

Star wars:The Force Awakens grossed an estimated $120.5 million in its first day, including $57 million for Thursday night preview shows, making it the highest single day on record, according to Walt Disney Co. The tally topped the previous record holder, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2," which grossed $91 million from its Thursday and Friday shows in July 2011. The film has already grossed more than $250 million worldwide.

The numbers for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" are unprecedented for a film premiering in December. The record holder for the biggest opening during the month is "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," which took in $85 million in domestic receipts in 2012.

"The Force Awakens" is expected to gross $180 million to $220 million through Sunday in its domestic opening weekend. However, those numbers began to look like conservative estimates following Thursday and Friday screenings. At that rate, the long-awaited space epic is poised to out-earn Universal's dino reboot, "Jurassic World," which broke the record for the biggest domestic opening by selling $208.8 million in tickets last June.

Diezani Allegedly Plots To Escape From UK To Another Country

Ex-Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, is on the verge of leaving her present abode in the United Kingdom for the Commonwealth of Dominica where she has reportedly acquired the citizenship, The Nation can authoritatively report.

Mrs.Alison-Madueke is currently under investigation in Britain for alleged corruption while in office.

Investigators in the UK and Nigeria were shocked by the discovery that she had secretly acquired the citizenship of the small Caribbean country of only 72,000 people.

But sources in the UK said the National Crime Agency (NCA) was already monitoring her movement.

It was learnt that the lid was blown open by some anti-corruption and civil society groups in the UK.

Alison-Madueke’s new citizenship was confirmed in a May 29, 2015 approval letter by the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, according to a document obtained by one of the groups.

The letter also claimed that the ex-Minister has been appointed that country’s Trade and Investment Commissioner for the Republic.

Although the letter indicated that the appointment was without salary package, she is expected to help in promoting and marketing Dominica as a trade and investment domicile.

In the diplomatic passport, DP0000445, the Dominican Government said Diezani should be allowed to “pass freely without let or hindrance and afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary.”

Issued on May 21, 2015, the diplomatic passport is expected to expire on May 20, 2020.

The granting of citizenship to the ex-Minister, whose passport indicated was born on 6th of December, 1960, has attracted diplomatic concerns.

“I think the NCA is suspecting that she acquired the citizenship of the Commonwealth of Dominica with the intent to relocate to this country. This has opened a fresh bend into our investigation,” a source said last night.

“It is not impossible that she had planned to escape to Dominica ahead of the inauguration of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari because her appointment ought to be effective from June 1, 2016 for an initial period of three years.

“She has been placed under stricter surveillance in the light of the latest development.

“While the diplomatic aspect is being handled by the appropriate quarters, I can tell you that the NCA is collaborating with many agencies to bring her to account for any allegation against her.

“The NCA is conducting extensive investigation into the oil deals during the tenure of Diezani, irrespective of her ongoing treatment for cancer.”

The International Corruption Unit (ICU) of NCA on October 2 arrested Diezani and four others.

All the suspects are being investigated for alleged bribery and money laundering.

Nigerian Army Reduces Death Sentences Passed On 66 Soldiers To 10 Years In Prison

The Nigerian Army has commuted the death sentences it passed on 66 solders earlier this year to 10 years imprisonment.

This was contained in the statement by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, on Saturday.

The army had in January and March 2015 in separate courts martial sentenced the 66 soldiers to death by firing squad for mutiny and other charges.

“The soldiers were arraigned on several count charges that include criminal conspiracy, conspiracy to commit mutiny, mutiny, attempt to commit an offence (murder), disobedience to particular orders, insubordinate behaviour and false accusation, among others,” the statement, which noted that 71 soldiers were tried, said.

“They were tried, discharged on some charges but found guilty and convicted on other charges which included mutiny. Out of the number, 66 were found guilty on some of the count charges and sentenced to death, while five were discharged and acquitted and one was given 28 days imprisonment with hard labour.

It added that the cases of other soldiers were being reviewed and would be made public once the appropriate reviews are completed.

The decision to commute the sentence of the soldiers, the army said, following series of petitions.

The petitions caused the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, to order a legal review of the cases.

“The directive was carried out to examine the merit of each case. It was on the basis of the review and recommendations that the Chief of Army Staff commuted the death sentences of the 66 soldiers to 10 years jail term. The sentences are to run concurrently,” the army said.

MEND threatens to resume militant activities in protest of NASS members huge salaries/allowances

The Movement of the Emancipation of Niger Delta, MEND, has threatened to resume militant activities if members of the National Assembly receive any outrageous allowances. Spokesman of the group Jomo Gbomo said this while speaking to newsmen yesterday June 21st.

“These wicked individuals appropriate to themselves huge and absurd salaries and allowances at the expense of the millions of hapless Nigerians, who have not been paid for months, their salaries, pensions and other benefits they deserve.
The Niger Delta region, where the bulk of revenue that sustains the nation comes from, continues to suffer neglect, environmental degradation and lack, made worse by the very corrupt and visionless past government of Goodluck Jonathan and his cronies, some of who still shamelessly parade themselves on national television and other media platforms as ‘Niger Delta Activists’.

Nigerians refuse to tolerate this ostentatious lifestyle of our lawmakers, whose main objective, it seems, is to enrich themselves and carelessly spend scarce resources. The Niger Delta people refuse to pamper and cater for the needs of these thieving Assembly rogues to their detriment. If the lawmakers refuse to make the necessary adjustments needed to accompany the needs of the masses and the Niger Delta region, it may lead to the resumption of hostilities.”he said
