Kenya’s President Announces End Of Mall Siege

Kenya’s president Uhuru Kenyatta has called for three days of national mourning for the victims of the siege by militant group al-Shabab on Nairobi’s Westgate shopping mall, just as he announced that the siege has ended.

Kenyatta said on Tuesday that 67 people had been killed in the attacks by al-Qaeda linked gunmen, and added five members of the armed group had been killed by gunfire and another 11 suspects are currently being held in custody.

“We have ashamed and defeated our attackers, that part of our task is completed,” he said in a televised address to the nation.

Sixy-one civilians and six members of the security forces had died in the four-day siege which Somali based armed group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for.

Kenyatta said “intelligence reports had suggested that a British woman and two or three American citizens may have been involved in the attack.”

“We cannot confirm the details at present but forensic experts are working to ascertain the nationalities of the terrorists.”

Somalia’s al-Shabab rebels had dismissed speculation in a Twitter post on Tuesday that any woman was involved in an attack by its fighters.

“We have an adequate number of young men who are fully committed and we do not employ our sisters in such military operations,” the group said.

In an interview on Monday, Kenya’s Foreign Minister Amina Mohamed told Al Jazeera that al-Qaeda, not al-Shabab, was behind the attack.

Al-Shabab is “not acting alone”, this assault is “part of an international terrorism campaign”, Mohamed said.

She said that about 20 gunmen and women were behind the attack, and that both the victims and perpetrators came from a variety of nationalities.

In a separate interview with the American PBS network, Mohamed said “two or three” Americans and one Briton were among the attackers.

In a speech on Monday, the Somali president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, described al-Shabab as a threat to the world.

“They are a threat to the continent of Africa, and the world at large,” he said.

Al-Shabab and al-Qaeda announced their alliance in February last year, and Abu Omar, an al-Shabab commander, confirmed in an interview with Al Jazeera that his group is taking orders from al-Qaeda.

The siege began midday on Saturday, when the gunmen marched into the complex, firing grenades and automatic weapons and sending panicked shoppers fleeing.

The dead include six Britons, two French women, two Canadians including a diplomat, a Chinese woman, two Indians, a South Korean, a South African and a Dutch woman, according to their governments.

Also killed was Ghanaian poet and former UN envoy Kofi Awoonor, 78, while his son was injured. [AlJazeera]

Shocker: Car buried with two bankers and their driver.

Residents of Nasarawa State were still in shock yesterday over the discovery of the bodies of two bankers and their driver.

They were allegedly ambushed by suspected Ombatse boys, who took them to the bush, killed them, set them ablaze with their car and buried them with the car by the riverside.

The incident happened at Tudun Adabu in Obi Local Government.

The Police Command has arrested 14 suspects in connection with the murder.

The deceased bankers are Alhaji Hassan Gidado, who was the managing director of the Police Microfinance Bank, and Mr. Tunde Banwo.

The police, at a news conference on Monday, said after the the bodies were exhumed, they were deposited at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia.

It was gathered that the two top bankers, who lived in Abuja, were in Lafia for the wedding of a child of the police commissioner-in-charge of Cooperative.

Police Commissioner Umar Shehu said the suspected killers would soon be taken to court. He assured residents that measures had been taken to curb the activities of the outlawed Ombatse group.

“We’re Not Against Our Father’s New Marriage’ Iwuanyanwu’s Kids Say

One of the daughters of billionaire businessman Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu has rubbished reports making the rounds that they are against their father’s marriage to the 26 year old daughter of one his late wife’s close friends.

I was reliably informed that they kicked against it initially but backed down after their father threatened to deal with anyone who gave him headache over his intentions to marry a much younger woman – but the children say it’s not true, so let’s believe them.

His daughter, Mrs Nwadiuto Iheakanwa, the MD of Champion newspaper told Encomium magazine: “We are not against our father’s new marriage. It’s not true that we the children kicked against it.

He made his choice and we wish him well in his new marriage. Papa is an old man (don’t let his new wife hear that o..lol) we should not give him stress. We want our father to have a long life and enjoy himself.

The lady herself consented to it. We spoke to her and she said she loves papa. We wish them goodluck.”

Chief Iwuanyanwu and his late wife, Lady Eudora, who died in August 2011, were married for 40 years and had eight children, most of whom are older than the woman he married this past weekend.

UNBELIEVABLE: Father Of Two, Housewife Caught Having Sex In The Bush

A commercial motorcyclist (Okada rider)who is a father of two and his married woman lover caused a mild drama in Orlu, Imo state after they were caught pants down making love in a lonely bush.

The 45-year-old housewife claimed the motorcyclist raped her but the 30-year-old man insisted that the woman was his concubine.

Giving account of what transpired to the police, the woman said she engaged the motorcyclist at Orlu to take her to her matrimonial home at Obibi-Ochasi.

She said when they got to a lonely area along the route, apparently the man stopped to ease himself and while she was waiting for him to finish easing himself, the man emerged and started asking that they sleep together, adding that when she refused the sexual advance, the man grabbed her and forcefully lifted her into the bush.

The woman went on to say the rapist tore her inner wears to shreds, over-powered and raped her.

The man while trying to defend himself claimed that the woman had been his concubine for years, adding that he had previously had fun with her at different times and places, including the spot where they were caught in the act.

He also claimed that he called the woman on her mobile line and asked her to meet him at the agreed spot in Orlu.

The man also claimed that when they got to the bush, the woman stripped herself naked, spread her wrapper on the ground and laid down before he started the act.

The randy okada man, however, agreed that along the line there was a minor misunderstanding on the amount he should pay after they had satisfied themselves.

While the man claimed that the woman was asking for N500 for the service, he offered N200, which he said was the only money on him at the time.

Vanguard equally gathered that plan was in top gear to arraign the alleged rapist in court to face trial.
